Tesla CEO Elon Musk has suggested that the company will begin trial operations of its long-anticipated robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, starting June 22, says a report by Business Standard. Responding to a query on X, formerly Twitter, Musk noted that while June 22 is the intended date, it remains flexible depending on final safety assessments.
“We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift,” Musk explained.
This announcement follows the release of a video shared by the tech billionaire last week, which shows a Tesla vehicle autonomously navigating through the streets of Austin with no human driver. The clip highlights Tesla’s progression towards launching its self-driving taxi initiative.
Additionally, Musk stated that, for the first time, a Tesla car will “fully drive itself from the factory end of line all the way to a customer house” on June 28.
A robotaxi refers to a fully self-driving vehicle built for passenger transport without requiring a human driver. These vehicles rely on a combination of artificial intelligence (AI), cameras, radar, sensors, and in some cases, LiDAR, to interpret surroundings and operate independently. Tesla’s robotaxis, like many in development globally, are electric, aligning with growing sustainability goals in urban transportation.
The introduction of robotaxis is expected to reshape city transportation by reducing operating costs and improving 24/7 mobility access. With the removal of human driving error, such vehicles have the potential to lower accident rates significantly. Their electric powertrains also aim to cut down carbon emissions and reduce traffic-related pollution.
The vehicle featured in Musk’s video is a standard Tesla Model Y, outfitted with the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software and labeled with “robotaxi” branding. According to Musk, these vehicles are regular production models with no structural modifications. “With the software update, it will become autonomous,” he said.
This is different from Tesla’s upcoming "cybercab," a purpose-built robotaxi design revealed in late 2024, which remains in development.
