Tesla has bought components from India to the value of $1 billion in 2022.
Tesla entering the Indian market has been a point of debate, discussion, and a lot more. The government too has been anticipating that the EV maker makes its products in India for the world, however, that conversation has not yet gathered traction. Tesla, though has been sourcing components from the country and according to Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Tesla has bought components from India to the value of $1 billion in 2022.
Speaking at the 63rd SIAM Annual Convention, Goyal said, “Already last year what one billion dollars of components from I think all of you sitting here. I have the list of companies who supplied to Tesla. This year the target is nearly 1.7 or 1.9 billion dollars what they mention yesterday I had a conversation with some of the other auto industry participants and they also indicated that they have interest in coming to India.”
This is a good sign then, and surely if more parts for Tesla cars are locally manufactured, it will help the company as well to make in the country. That, however, has still not been finalised. These certainly look like baby steps towards not just helping Tesla find a place in the Indian market, but also help the company price its cars competitively.
