Toyota’s luxury MPVs, the Alphard and the Vellfire, now have plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants in Japan, which will be available from January 31, 2025. Additionally, Toyota has revised the petrol and hybrid models of the two MPVs. The Alphard PHEV is priced at JPY 10.6 million (roughly ₹57.76 lakh), while the Vellfire PHEV is priced at JPY 10.8 million (roughly ₹58.86 lakh).
While Toyota hasn’t given the battery specifics, it claims that both models have an electric-only range of around 73 km. The “large-capacity” lithium-ion battery is mounted under the floor, and the AC can also run on the batteries and doesn’t require the AC. The PHEV models are the only 6-seater variants in the Alphard and Vellfire lineup, while all others are either 7- or 8-seater variants.
The two PHEVs use the same 2.5-litre petrol engine as the hybrid models and have a combined output of 302 bhp. The battery can be charged to up to 80 per cent using a 50 kW DC charger and also comes with vehicle-to-home (V2H) functionality. Toyota also highlighted that with the larger battery that is mounted on the floor, the centre of gravity of the Alphard and Vellfire MPVs has been reduced by 35 mm compared to the hybrid models.
The petrol and hybrid models of the Alphard and Vellfire get digital interior rear-view mirrors (IRVMs) with built-in dashcams. The top-spec Alphard Z and Vellfire Z Premier trims also get a 15-speaker JBL-tuned audio system as well as 14-inch rear-seat entertainment screens. While the Vellfire gets three new exterior colours, the Alphard now gets an 8-seater base-spec variant.
