Neta, which is facing financial woes, could help Toyota accelerate its slow EV push in China's tough market.
Toyota is reportedly considering acquiring Neta, a struggling Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand, to strengthen its position in China’s fiercely competitive EV market.
Neta, launched in 2018 by Hozon Auto, has faced significant challenges, including mounting losses and declining sales.
Despite early success with affordable EVs like the Neta V, the brand reported massive losses in 2024, exacerbated by a price war and overcapacity in China’s EV sector.
Neta’s workforce has been slashed, and its parent company is grappling with debt, making it a potential acquisition target.
Toyota, traditionally cautious about fully electric vehicles, has lagged behind rivals in China’s EV race. The company has focused on hybrids but now seeks to expand its EV portfolio.
Acquiring Neta could provide Toyota with established production facilities, a local brand identity, and expertise in budget-friendly EVs, helping it compete with agile Chinese manufacturers.
Toyota’s bZ4X and other EVs have struggled to gain traction, underscoring the need for a bolder approach.
If confirmed, the acquisition would mark a big shift for Toyota, reflecting the urgency for global automakers to adapt to China’s EV boom.
For global consumers, this signals Toyota’s commitment to electrification, potentially bringing more affordable EVs to markets beyond China. As talks progress, the industry watches closely to see if Toyota can turn Neta’s fortunes around and cement its EV legacy.
