This new generation of Toyota EVs can do 1,200 km of range on a single charge.
Toyota is working on a new kind of electric vehicle that will be powered by a solid state battery. This would help the electric car travel up to 1,200 km on a single charge. These batteries also take just around 10 minutes or so to get fully charged, unlike lithium-ion batteries that take around 30-45 minutes to charge from 0-80 per cent, using a fast charger.
Solid state batteries are also known to last longer than lithium-ion batteries. The former are good for 8,000 to 10,000 charge cycles, compared to the 1,500 to 2,000 cycles of current lithium-ion batteries. This also translates to a more sustainable option compared to the current lot of EV batteries.

While exact details like the bodystyle of these cars, and what all the features will come packed with are still under wraps. Toyota has said to Forbes that these new solid-state batteries will be offered in its nex-gen EVs as early as 2027. This project is a very integral part of the brand’s decarbonisation strategy.
Currently, the Ford Mustang Mach-E holds the record for travelling the furthest on a single charge and the American EV is powered by a 68 kWh li-ion battery as standard, with a long range option on offer too with a capacity of 88 kWh. The only manufacturer at the moment that comes closely to Toyota with quick charging times is BYD. The Chinese brand recently unveiled its latest EV platform called “Super e-Platform” that can charge its proprietary blade batteries for 400 km of range in just 5 minutes. BYD could achieve this by redesigning the batteries and a new supercharge that is capable of delivering 1,000 kW of power – which translates to 2 km of driving range per second. Toyota already holds the recognition for producing the world’s first mass-produced hybrid car with the Prius way back in 1997. Will its next generation EVs be the brand’s next mass-produced EVs for the world? Remains to be seen. However, the Prius in India was not affordable by any means and at ₹45.43 lakh (ex-showroom) it was quite an expensive purchase. So, will these new-gen EVs be off the same “Prius” mass-produced-EV kind, if it launches in India? – that remains to be seen.
