In a step towards clean energy innovation and carbon neutrality Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has embarked on a journey to establish itself as a clean energy facilitator in India by launching a pilot hydrogen-powered microgrid initiative in collaboration with electrolyser manufacturer Ohmium. The project marks Toyota's expansion beyond automotive manufacturing into India's renewable energy sector.
The collaboration merges Ohmium's advanced modular PEM electrolyser technology with Toyota's internationally recognised fuel cell stack capabilities. This integration creates a self-contained green hydrogen production and utilisation system designed specifically for decentralised power generation.
"This is a seeding phase where innovation with Indian partners becomes vital to build a roadmap for larger-scale hydrogen deployment," Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President, TKM, was quoted as saying by ET Manufacturing.
"The input to the electrolyser is simply water and air — it outputs pure green hydrogen, which is then converted into clean electricity through our fuel cell stack. This offers a potentially complete microgrid solution for decentralised, off-grid power," he added.
This initiative demonstrates Toyota's transformation from a traditional vehicle manufacturer to a clean energy solutions provider. The company is leveraging its fuel cell expertise to address India's growing demand for sustainable industrial power solutions.
The pilot focuses on understanding the practical integration of electrolysis and fuel cell technologies while adapting them for Indian operational conditions and requirements.
The pilot project specifically targets industrial operations that face challenges with grid connectivity or require uninterrupted clean power supply. TKM officials indicated that successful implementation could create new market opportunities for distributed renewable energy systems in India's industrial sector.
