While the Indian market is eagerly anticipating the launch of Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, Toyota is gearing up to introduce its own version of the electric SUV. Called the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV, the compact battery-powered SUV is slated to make its India debut on 20 January 2026. Toyota showcased a near-production concept at the Auto Expo last year.
The Japanese carmaker has now teased the Urban Cruiser EV on its social media handles ahead of its debut later this month. The teaser video shares partial glimpses of the SUV but they are evident enough to suggest that the final production-spec model will be more or less similar to the concept showcased at the Auto Expo.
Styled around Toyota’s new ‘Urban Tech’ design philosophy, the Urban Cruiser EV will flaunt the brand’s signature “hammerhead” front fascia, featuring sleek LED headlights with LED eyebrows and a beefy front bumper with a sculpted bonnet. Its heavily cladded side profile underscores a rugged character, while the two-box silhouette, blacked-out pillars, squared wheel arches, and machine-cut 18- or 19-inch aero-optimised alloy wheels are carried over from the concept model.

Mirroring its Suzuki counterpart, the Urban Cruiser EV will house the charging flap on the front left fender, with the rear door handles neatly integrated into the C-pillars. At the back, a full-width LED light signature adds a contemporary touch. Toyota will offer the Urban Cruiser EV in a range of colour options, including dual-tone combinations with a contrasting black roof.
Although the teaser doesn’t reveal anything about its interiors, we expect it to be aligned with the concept presented at the Auto Expo last year which it shares with the Suzuki e Vitara. This includes a a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster, and a two-spoke steering wheel.
Other notable amenities expected to be offered include automatic climate control, wireless charger, powered driver’s seat, panoramic sunroof, reclining rear seats, JBL audio system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS.

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is expected to share the same motor and battery options as its Suzuki sibling. Built on a dedicated BEV skateboard platform, Toyota will offer two battery options — 49 kWh and 61 kWh — with the Urban Cruiser EV. The one with the smaller battery pack will come with a single-motor, front-wheel drive layout which pushes out 142 bhp and 189 Nm of peak torque.
Meanwhile, the 61 kWh unit is paired with an electric motor that dishes out 172 bhp and 189 Nm of peak torque, powering the front wheels. Like the Maruti e vitara, the India-spec Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is unlikely to receive the all-wheel drive version. The larger 61 kWh battery can provide a range of up to 543 km on a single charge.
