Uber Technologies plans to invest up to $1.25 billion in electric vehicle maker Rivian Automotive as part of a long-term robotaxi partnership. The two companies have agreed to deploy up to 50,000 fully autonomous robotaxis on the Uber platform in the United States, Canada and Europe through 2031. The deal covers the purchase and use of future Rivian R2-based autonomous vehicles and related software and services.
Under the agreement, Uber or its fleet partners will buy 10,000 autonomous Rivian R2 robotaxis for exclusive use on Uber’s ride-hailing and delivery apps, with an option for 40,000 more vehicles from 2030. The first robotaxis are expected to launch in San Francisco and Miami in 2028, before expanding to up to 25 cities across North America and Europe. The investment will be made in stages, starting with an initial $300 million stake in Rivian, and further tranches will depend on regulatory approvals and project milestones.
Rivian will supply the autonomous driving system, including hardware, software and remote operations support, while Uber will integrate robotaxi services into its existing products such as UberX, Uber Comfort, Uber Electric and delivery offerings. Uber will also pay licensing fees for Rivian’s autonomous technology over the life of the deal. The robotaxis will operate as part of Uber’s broader plan to expand autonomous mobility and reduce operating costs on its network.finance.
The partnership builds on Uber’s existing work with autonomous vehicle operators and on Rivian’s push to grow beyond consumer EVs into fleet and platform sales. The companies expect the robotaxi deployment to ramp up over several years as regulators clear commercial services in each market and as production of the R2 platform scales. Rivian has stated that the Uber deal is a key part of its strategy to secure large fleet orders and recurring software and services revenue.
There are other partnerships that link ride-hailing platforms with autonomous vehicle and robotaxi providers. Uber has a 10-year commercial agreement with Motional to deploy Level 4 autonomous vehicles for ride-hailing and deliveries, starting with services in Las Vegas and planned expansion to Los Angeles. Uber Freight also has a long-term deal with autonomous trucking company Aurora to use driverless trucks on key freight routes. Lyft has a partnership with Waymo to bring robotaxi services to Nashville from 2026, while Waymo also works with Uber to offer robotaxis in cities such as Atlanta and Austin.
