Automotive component manufacturer Uno Minda Ltd. has announced its foray into the assembly of complete seating systems for passenger vehicles (PVs). This is an expansion of Uno Minda's product portfolio in the automotive interiors segment. To support the new business, the company's board has approved a capital expenditure of around ₹320 crore to establish a greenfield manufacturing facility at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra.
The facility is likely to commence commercial production in the fourth quarter of FY28.
The project will be undertaken through Uno Minda Tachi-S Seating Pvt. Ltd., the company's joint venture (JV) with Japan-based automotive seating specialist Tachi-S Company Limited.
The company said the joint venture has already secured a supply contract from a major automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), providing an initial production pipeline before the facility becomes operational.
Uno Minda and Tachi-S entered into the partnership in September 2022, initially focusing on the production and supply of passenger vehicle seat recliners. With the latest investment, the joint venture will expand its operations to manufacture complete seating systems, enabling it to increase its value contribution across passenger vehicle programmes.
According to Ravi Mehra, Managing Director of Uno Minda Ltd., the move into integrated passenger vehicle seating systems is part of the company's broader strategy to strengthen its presence in premium automotive interior components and expand its business with vehicle manufacturers.
