French automotive supplier Valeo has secured a contract with an undisclosed Indian vehicle OEM to supply its Smart Safety 360 advanced driver assistance system for commercial vehicles, with production set to take place at its factory in Sanand, Gujarat, the company announced on Wednesday. The system, known as VSS360, has been engineered specifically for Indian road conditions and tailored to meet local regulatory requirements, a distinction Valeo was keen to emphasise as carmakers and fleet operators across the country face growing pressure to improve road safety standards.
Marc Vrecko, chief executive of Valeo's Brain Division, said the contract was evidence that premium safety technology could be adapted to work effectively in demanding real-world environments.
"India is a cornerstone of our Elevate 2028 strategy, and we are focused on providing scalable and cost-optimised safety solutions suited to local requirements," Vrecko added.
The deal brings together a suite of active and passive safety functions, including Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, and Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning. It also incorporates a Moving Off Information System and Blind Spot Information System, both aimed at reducing the risk to pedestrians and cyclists in the path of larger vehicles.
At its core, the VSS360 merges radar fusion technology with a smart front camera into a single-box unit, doing away with the separate electronic control units that have traditionally complicated ADAS integration. Three radars and one camera are packaged and integrated by Valeo within that architecture, simplifying fitment into existing vehicle platforms.
The system also supports over-the-air software updates and is compatible with both 12V and 24V electrical architectures via its Univolt Camera, making it deployable across everything from light commercial vehicles to heavy-duty trucks.
Jayakumar G, Group President and Managing Director of Valeo India, said he expects the regulatory landscape in India to act as a further catalyst for ADAS uptake across the commercial vehicle segment in the coming years.
