Volkswagen Abandons Revenue Growth Targets Amid Profit Slump and Restructuring Pressure

Volkswagen Group has reportedly scrapped its revenue growth forecast for 2026, marking a major strategic reversal as the manufacturer grapples with falling market share, geopolitical trade hurdles, and aggressive competition. 

The Wolfsburg-based company now projects its full-year sales revenue to decline by up to 3% or remain flat compared to the previous year. The downward guidance adjustment followed the release of second-quarter financial results, which revealed a 9.5% year-on-year drop in operating profit to €3.47 billion ($4 billion). 

To mitigate escalating structural costs, Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume is pushing for a sweeping corporate restructuring program. CEO Blume informed employees that Volkswagen's operational costs remain approximately 20% higher than key global competitors, necessitating aggressive cost-containment measures.

The proposed overhaul includes potential global headcount reductions of up to 100,000 positions, doubling the initial job-cut targets previously agreed upon with trade unions. Also, plans under review could potentially eliminate up to half of Volkswagen's current vehicle model portfolio and shutter up to four domestic manufacturing plants in Germany.

Chief Executive Oliver Blume cited severe external headwinds impacting operational performance, including ongoing trade disputes, costly import tariffs, stringent emissions regulations, and accelerating competition from local electric vehicle manufacturers in China.
