India’s JSW Group is reportedly in advanced talks with Volkswagen AG to acquire a sizable stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India.
German automaker Volkswagen AG is in advanced discussions to sell a stake in its Indian operations, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd to JSW Group, according to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the matter. The proposed transaction could result in JSW acquiring a majority holding in the business, bringing in fresh capital to boost the German carmaker's local unit in the world's third-largest automobile market.
The negotiations centre on Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, which oversees the group's complete domestic footprint, including Skoda and Volkswagen alongside premium and luxury marques such as Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bentley. Both parties are working toward reaching a potential agreement in the coming weeks, though the terms remain under negotiation and several key hurdles persist, including finalised valuations and future capital investment commitments.

The potential deal caps a years-long search by Volkswagen for a domestic partner in India, where the brand has struggled to gain a sizable market share despite operating for more than two decades. Across its full brand portfolio, the Volkswagen Group currently accounts for approximately 2.5% of India's passenger vehicle market. The country has taken on increased strategic importance for Volkswagen as it reshapes its global strategy following its exit from Russia and reduced operations in China.
For JSW Group, securing a majority stake would mark its second major entry into India's automotive sector. The steel-to-energy group previously acquired a stake in MG Motor India from SAIC Motor in 2023 to establish JSW MG Motor India. Partnering with Volkswagen would grant JSW direct access to European vehicle architectures and engineering platforms, further accelerating its ambitious automobile expansion goals.
