The Chinese firm edges closer to commercialisation of next-gen EV batteries.
Volkswagen-supported Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech has achieved a milestone by entering pilot-scale production of its proprietary all-solid-state "Jinshi Battery".
The company has also initiated design for a 2 GWh mass production facility, paving the way for widespread industrialisation of solid-state technology in China, as per reports from IT-Home.
Developed over eight years and unveiled in May 2024, the Jinshi Battery employs a sulfide-based solid electrolyte with groundbreaking material advancements, including micronised electrolytes, ultra-thin coated single-crystal cathodes, and three-dimensional mesoporous silicon anodes.
Boasting an energy density of 350 Wh/kg (40% superior to conventional ternary lithium batteries) it excels in safety, acing tests like 200°C thermal exposure, nail penetration, and crush simulations.
Gotion's 0.2 GWh pilot line features fully localised core equipment with a consistent 90% yield rate. Key enhancements include a 60% boost in sulfide electrolyte ionic conductivity and a 90% reduction in cell preload pressure, ensuring superior production uniformity. Post a year-long endurance trials, cell capacity has surged 150% from initial prototypes.
The battery endures over 3,000 charge cycles with a projected one-million-kilometre lifespan. At pack level, it delivers 280 Wh/kg, supporting a 1,000 km range per charge across temperatures from -20°C to 85°C. Prototype vehicles have clocked more than 10,000 km in real-world testing.
While specifics on investment or timelines for the 2 GWh line remain undisclosed, experts peg costs at 1.5-2 billion yuan (₹1,700-2,300 crore) per GWh, drawing from semi-solid projects. Gotion targets small-scale vehicle integration by 2027 and full mass production by 2030.
In a novel tie-up, Gotion is partnering with eVTOL pioneer EHang to adapt the tech for low-altitude aircraft. Analysts believe these strides will bridge China's lag behind Japanese and Korean rivals, contingent on mastering costs and interface stability for true scalability.
