Volkswagen has officially opened bookings for the Golf GTI premium hatchback in India from May 5, marking the performance model’s debut in the domestic market. The vehicle will be imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), with the initial allocation limited to 250 units. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in June through select dealerships nationwide. This marks Volkswagen’s second GTI-branded offering in India, following the limited-run Polo GTI introduced in 2016.
Powering the India-spec Golf GTI is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 261 bhp and 370 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that drives the front wheels. An electronically controlled front-axle differential lock is also fitted as standard, aiding traction and handling. According to the manufacturer, the Golf GTI can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.9 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph.
Visually, the hot hatch retains its sporty, performance-oriented styling. It features 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels as standard, with optional 19-inch wheels. Design highlights include GTI-specific bumpers, dual exhaust tips, a dual-tone roof spoiler, and five-piece lighting integrated into the front bumper. LED daytime running lights extend into the grille from the headlamps, contributing to a distinctive front-end look. The Golf GTI will be offered in four colour choices: Grenadilla Black Metallic, Oryx White Premium, Moonstone Grey Black, and Kings Red Premium.
Inside the cabin, the Golf GTI shares its dashboard layout and key features with the recently launched Tiguan R Line. It includes a 15-inch central infotainment touchscreen with upgraded graphics and a simplified menu system. The infotainment system is also equipped with ChatGPT-based voice assistance.
Other key interior features include a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a flat-bottomed GTI-branded steering wheel, and sports seats finished in the brand’s signature tartan-patterned upholstery. The India-spec version is also expected to feature Matrix LED headlights and 3D LED tail-lamps, aligning it with the global variant.
In the Indian market, the Golf GTI will compete with the Mini Cooper S. While the Cooper S offers 201 bhp and a three-door layout, the Golf GTI presents a more practical five-door alternative with greater output and advanced technology. Given its CBU status and performance positioning, the Golf GTI is expected to carry a premium price tag above ₹50 lakh (ex-showroom).
