Volkswagen India has announced that it will pass on the complete benefit of the recent GST rate reduction to customers across its entire model range, joining a wave of carmakers offering significant price cuts following the Government of India's GST 2.0 reforms. The revised pricing will become effective from 22nd September 2025, coinciding with the implementation of the new tax structure.
The German carmaker's decision will result in substantial savings for prospective buyers, with price reductions ranging from ₹66,900 on the Virtus sedan to ₹3.27 lakh on the premium Tiguan R-Line SUV. The Taigun compact SUV will see a reduction of up to ₹68,400.
The GST reforms have significantly altered the tax landscape for automobiles in India. Small cars under four metres in length with engines up to 1,200cc (petrol) or 1,500cc (diesel) now attract 18% GST, down from the previous 28%. Larger vehicles exceeding four metres in length and engines above these thresholds are now subject to a 40% GST rate, compared to the earlier structure that included both GST and additional cess charges ranging from 43-50%.
Volkswagen's announcement follows similar moves by major competitors across the industry. Maruti Suzuki customers can expect savings ranging from ₹36,000 to over ₹1.10 lakh depending on the model and variant. Hyundai has slashed prices by up to ₹2.4 lakh, with the Tucson SUV receiving the maximum benefit.
Tata Motors has implemented price reductions ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹1.55 lakh across its passenger vehicle lineup, with the Nexon SUV offering the highest savings. Mahindra has been particularly aggressive, implementing benefits immediately from 6th September rather than waiting until 22nd September, offering savings up to ₹1.56 lakh on select diesel variants of the XUV3XO.
Even luxury manufacturers have joined the price reduction trend. Mercedes-Benz has announced cuts of up to ₹11 lakh on select models, whilst BMW has reduced prices by up to ₹9 lakh. The premium Škoda brand, Volkswagen's sister company, has announced reductions of up to ₹3.28 lakh across its range.
In addition to the GST benefits, Volkswagen customers can also avail additional benefits ranging from ₹1.61 lakh to ₹3 lakh on select models of Taigun, Virtus, and Tiguan R-Line respectively, making the overall proposition even more attractive during the festive season.
The implementation of GST 2.0 represents one of the most significant tax reforms in the Indian automotive sector, with manufacturers universally welcoming the move as it simplifies the tax structure whilst reducing the overall burden on consumers. This development is expected to boost vehicle sales during the crucial festive period, making personal mobility more accessible to Indian consumers.
