Volkswagen AG's primary shareholders have warned that the automaker is at a historic crossroads and must immediately reduce costs and scale back excess capacity.
The controlling Porsche-Piech families behind Volkswagen Group have reportedly issued a strong directive to the automaker's management, warning that the company is at a historic crossroads and must act immediately to safeguard its long-term competitiveness. The intervention comes as the German automotive giant faces mounting pressures from aggressive Chinese rivals, high operational overheads, and shrinking profitability.
Speaking on behalf of Porsche SE, the investment vehicle of the Porsche and Piech families and Volkswagen's primary shareholder, board chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch told Reuters that delaying strategic decisions will only compound the company's challenges. Poetsch emphasised that leadership across the organisation must step up and take responsibility to preserve sustainable competitiveness.

Adding to the call for action, Porsche SE chief financial officer Johannes Lattwein urged Volkswagen to address excess production capacity, implement deeper cost reductions, and streamline internal decision-making processes. The firm's management warnings coincide with Porsche SE reporting a 14.5% decline in its adjusted half-year earnings after tax to €949 million ($1.1 billion). Porsche SE holds a 31.9% stake in Volkswagen Group alongside a 12.5% stake in sports car brand Porsche AG.
The stern message from the founding families reinforces Volkswagen's ongoing restructuring efforts, which include plans to slim down its product portfolio, optimise workforce capacity, and address weak sales momentum in key global markets like China.
