Volkswagen India has finally announced the price for the new Tayron R-Line, the brand’s latest flagship SUV in the country. The new Volkswagen Tayron will be available in the single fully-loaded R-Line spec, and is priced at an introductory ₹46.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
Bookings for the new Tayron R-Line are already underway, while deliveries are set to commence soon. The new Tayron R-Line is positioned above the Tiguan R-Line in the automaker’s lineup, but unlike the latter, the former is being locally assembled in India, making for the competitive price tag.
The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line is a three-row offering based on the Tiguan, and steps in place of the Tiguan AllSpace that went off the shelves in 2021 in India. The Tayron not only debuts a new name but also comes with all-new styling, a more upmarket cabin, and a powerful petrol engine under the bonnet. It also packs more features, especially over the Tiguan R-Line, making it the better equipped SUV of the two.

The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line is based on the MQB EVO platform that underpins a host of Volkswagen Group cars. The SUV is nearly identical to the Tiguan but gets a 109 mm longer wheelbase with larger overhangs, which makes way for a third row in the cabin. That said, the space is best reserved for children and is a largely compromised extra row of seating capacity. Folding the third row opens up an enormous 850 litres of boot capacity.
The cabin remains identical too, but scores highly on good fit and finish, plastics, and materials used. There’s a digital instrument console and a massive 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system that houses most of the controls. The front seats are electronically adjustable, and also come with ventilation and massage features. There’s a panoramic roof, connected tech, a sliding and reclining second row, and three-zone climate control. The safety features include nine airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, Hill Ascent and Descent Control, Level 2 ADAS, and a whole lot more.

Powering the Tayron R-Line is the tried and tested 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops 201 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. As we found out in our first drive recently, the SUV is quick, sharp around corners, and holds on to the road without any drama. Power goes to all four wheels via all-wheel drive using the 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. The three-row SUV can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 6.3 seconds and has a top speed of 224 kmph.
The new Volkswagen Tayron R-Line primarily competes against the locally assembled Skoda Kodiaq in the same space. It’s also facing the heat from the mighty Toyota Fortuner, which continues to be the segment leader. Meanwhile, there’s also the new MG Majestor aiming to take away some customers with its massive proportions and off-roading capability.
