With production confirmed in Brazil, Volkswagen plans to target domestic buyers and customers across other South American markets.
Volkswagen Brazil recently teased a new subcompact SUV set to enter the Brazilian market. The teaser suggests that this latest model could be a counterpart to the upcoming Skoda Kylaq, scheduled for launch in 2024. With production confirmed in Brazil, Volkswagen plans to target domestic buyers and customers across other South American markets.
While the teaser does not disclose many specifics, a sporty and dynamic profile for Volkswagen’s new subcompact SUV is expected. As observed in the partial images of the Skoda Kylaq, there are indications of similarities in design elements such as the lighting setup, including headlamps and LED daytime running lights (DRLs). Both models will likely feature a distinct front grille and bumper layout that exudes a unique identity while adhering to a design language consistent with their respective brands.
The side profile of Volkswagen's new subcompact SUV might bear similarities to the Skoda Kylaq, potentially featuring body-coloured conventional door handles, dual-tone ORVMs, and roof rails. This design choice hints at a sporty and modern aesthetic. However, the rear of the vehicle will have a different design approach, with unique tail lamps and a distinctive bumper.
While there has been no official word on the dimensions, it is anticipated that the SUV's length will hover around 4 metres. Positioned below the Volkswagen Nivus and T-Cross in the company's product lineup, this SUV might emerge as a compelling alternative to the Polo, particularly for consumers considering the higher Polo variants.
The upcoming Volkswagen subcompact SUV is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. A standout feature of this powertrain is its flexibility to run on both petrol and ethanol, catering to the Brazilian market's high ethanol consumption. Brazil is known for its widespread use of ethanol as an alternative fuel source, making this engine an apt choice for the region. The transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic, available exclusively in a front-wheel-drive configuration.
