Volkswagen has also hinted at an upcoming ID 2all SUV, expected to debut in 2026.
Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce a new range of low-cost electric vehicles (EVs) by 2027, with a target price of approximately $21,800 (approx. ₹18.17 lakh). This move follows the dissolution of a partnership with Renault to develop an entry-level EV at a similar price point. Despite the setback, Volkswagen is proceeding independently with its affordable EV initiative.
After unsuccessful negotiations with Renault, Volkswagen decided to develop its low-cost EVs solo. Meanwhile, Renault remains committed to launching a budget-friendly successor to its Twingo e-Tech, also targeting a price of around $21,800 (approx. ₹18.17 lakh).
In a recent statement, Volkswagen reaffirmed its commitment to unveiling its new affordable EVs in 2027, maintaining its goal to keep prices around the $21,800 mark. This aligns with the company’s broader strategy to make electric vehicles more accessible to a wider audience.
In March, the German automaker introduced the ID 2all concept, showcasing its upcoming affordable EVs' potential design and features. The ID 2all is designed to offer the spaciousness of a Golf and the affordability of a Polo, with an expected starting price under $27,000 (approx. ₹22.51 lakh). Volkswagen aims to develop an even more cost-effective model, likely to be named the ID 1.
The ID 2all is based on a modified version of Volkswagen’s MEB platform and is projected to have a range of up to 279 miles (450 km). The anticipated ID 1 will likely share components with the ID 2all but feature smaller battery options, such as 38 or 58 kWh, to reduce costs further.
Volkswagen has also hinted at an upcoming ID 2all SUV, expected to debut in 2026. This entry-level electric SUV will expand Volkswagen’s portfolio, offering consumers various affordable EV options.
