OEM gains traction in the sedan segment which has been witnessing a declining trend over the last 3-4 years.
Volkswagen India has announced that its sedan, the Virtus, achieved its highest-ever monthly sales in October 2025, with 2,453 units sold. The milestone, launched in early 2022, claims an over 40 percent share of the premium sedan segment in recent months.
The Virtus is a key pillar in Volkswagen’s India 2.0 strategy. Alongside its SUV counterpart, the Taigun, the duo has collectively surpassed 1.6 lakh unit sales in India. According to its maker, Virtus has been the highest-selling mid-size sedan in India for more than a year now, bettering more established rivals like Honda City and Hyundai Verna.

Nitin Kohli, Brand Director at Volkswagen India, credited the model’s success to its blend of design, performance, and safety. He added, “With both the SUV and sedan complementing each other in appeal, the India 2.0 range continues to strengthen the brand’s position in the premium car market.”
While the Indian automotive market has been largely dominated by SUVs in recent years, sedans are witnessing a quiet revival. Industry data indicates that the sedan segment grew by nearly 18 percent year-on-year in FY2024, led by strong performances from models such as the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and the Volkswagen Virtus. Premium sedans now account for around 8–9 percent of total passenger car sales, a notable rebound from their sub-6 percent share in 2020.
Volkswagen’s focus on globally benchmarked products tailored for Indian preferences appears to be paying off. The Virtus’ continued momentum, despite the SUV boom, also reflects an appetite for sedans in the Indian Passenger Vehicle market. The Virtus is currently offered in 14 variants, priced between Rs 11.16 lakh and Rs 18.73 lakh (both ex-showroom).
The whole Skoda Auto Volkswagen group reported a monthly sales volume of 12,055 units in October 2020. In September,Volkswagen sold 2,780 units in India which included Virtus (1,648 units), Taigun (1,114 units), Tiguan (17 units) and Golf (1 units). The German carmaker ended FY2025 with a total sales volume of approximately 84,000 units including domestic and exports.
