Volvo Cars plans to launch 13 new models between now and 2030 as the Swedish automaker looks to broaden its portfolio and revive sales, according to news agency Reuters. The automaker outlined the product expansion ahead of an investor day in Stockholm on Thursday, with six models planned for China and seven aimed at Western markets.
The strategy comes under CEO Hakan Samuelsson, who has streamlined Volvo’s product portfolio while placing greater emphasis on regionalisation and market-specific offerings.
The company is targeting an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margin of more than 8 per cent, compared with 3.5 per cent in 2025. Volvo said the planned product launches would support its efforts to improve profitability while expanding its presence across key markets.
The Western-market models will be based on Volvo’s SPA2 and SPA3 platforms, while the vehicles developed specifically for China will be created in collaboration with sister company Geely Auto.
The planned launches mark a further shift in Volvo’s approach to product development, with the company putting greater emphasis on vehicles tailored to individual regional markets.
Rather than relying on a largely common global line-up with extensive customisation, Volvo is moving towards more region-specific products. China will account for six of the 13 planned models, while seven will be introduced across Western markets.
The approach is aimed to make Volvo’s product strategy more closely aligned with differing customer preferences and market conditions, while also allowing the company to leverage its relationship with Geely for vehicles developed for the Chinese market.
Electrification remains another central element of the strategy. Volvo has continued to position electric vehicles as an important part of its future product plans, alongside the broader regionalisation of its portfolio.
"Our product offensive builds on four unique strengths: regionalised product offerings, leadership in electrification, unique synergies with Geely, and complete customer offers that goes beyond the car alone," Samuelsson was quoted as saying in a statement.
The expansion of the line-up is being pursued as Volvo seeks to improve sales while raising profitability. Its EBIT margin stood at 3.5 per cent in 2025, leaving the company targeting an improvement of more than four percentage points by the end of the decade.
The use of SPA2 and SPA3 for Western-market products will form part of Volvo’s strategy for its next generation of vehicles, while collaboration with Geely will support the development of China-focused models.
The 13-model plan combines product expansion with a more differentiated regional strategy. For Volvo, the focus through 2030 will be on increasing the breadth of its portfolio while using electrification, platform sharing and regional product development to support its financial targets.
