Volvo Cars has commenced production of its eagerly awaited, fully electric Volvo ES90 sedan, marking a significant milestone in the company’s transition to electrification. The ES90 is the first Volvo model to feature advanced 800-volt technology, promising industry-leading charging speeds and extended driving range.
Built at Volvo’s Chengdu plant using climate-neutral energy, the ES90 combines the elegance of a modern sedan with the adaptability of a fastback and the spaciousness of an SUV. This unique blend of segments caters to drivers seeking a versatile electric vehicle without compromise. Powered by the next-generation Superset tech stack, the car will evolve through continuous over-the-air software updates, ensuring owners benefit from the latest safety and performance enhancements.
Since opening order books in early September, Volvo has reported strong interest across Europe, Asia Pacific and North America. The company expects customer deliveries to begin later this year in key markets, with orders already exceeding production estimates.
Volvo’s chief industrial operations officer, Francesca Gamboni, emphasised the ES90’s role in the company’s electrification strategy. “The fully electric ES90 marks a major milestone as Volvo Cars steps into a new era of safety, sustainability and human-centric technology,” she said. “With production now underway, we’re reaffirming our commitment to a fully electrified future and proving our ability to innovate and meet customer demands.”
Despite its many strengths, the ES90 faces competition from established electric luxury sedans. Key rivals include the Mercedes-Benz EQE, known for its refined ride and plush interior; the BMW i5, which offers a sporty driving experience; and the Tesla Model S, famed for its cutting-edge autonomous driving features and widespread charging network. In the Chinese market, the BYD Han EV is also making inroads with its competitive pricing and extended range.
