Volvo’s new XC70 PHEV SUV features a 39.6 kWh battery with 245km electric-only range. It is set to launch later this year.
Volvo has reintroduced the XC70 nameplate with its latest plug-in hybrid (PHEV) crossover SUV, revealed on 25 May 2025.
This mid-size SUV, built on the Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), blends Volvo’s signature design with advanced hybrid technology. With a 39.6 kWh battery, the XC70 offers up to 245 km of electric-only range under CLTC conditions, making it Volvo’s longest-range PHEV yet.
It is designed primarily for the Chinese market, where it will launch in September 2025.
The XC70 showcases Volvo’s iconic design language, featuring Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights, vertical headlamps integrated into the front bumper, and retractable door handles for a streamlined look.
Its EX90-inspired aesthetic includes a shield-like closed grille with active shutters for improved aerodynamics and efficiency.
The SUV is likely based on the Lynk & Co 08 (another brand from Volvo’s parent company Geely). It uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, delivering 160 bhp from the internal combustion engine alone.
With a claimed top speed of 180 km/h and a potential combined range of up to 1,200 km, it caters to diverse driving needs. Do note that the official overall range figures aren't out yet. Full electric motor details are also pending.
Positioned between the XC60 and XC90, the XC70 targets buyers seeking a balance of electric efficiency and long-range flexibility.
While initially exclusive to China, Volvo is exploring global markets, potentially avoiding tariffs by producing in its South Carolina plant.
The XC70’s blend of style, safety, and hybrid innovation makes it a compelling choice in the competitive SUV landscape.
