The Bengaluru resident has 270 traffic violations amounting to ₹ 1.36 Lakh
In the smartest city of the country, a Benguluru woman has been slapped with a hefty fine of ₹ 1.36 lakh for a whopping 270 traffic violations, showing complete disregard for traffic rules. And you would be thinking it might be on a large-capacity motorcycle with several overspeeding charges, but you would be wrong. She was riding a Honda Activa, which is nearly half the value of her fines.
The woman's reckless behaviour included riding without a helmet, endangering herself and any potential pillion rider by not providing them with a helmet either. She further compounded the risk by riding on the wrong side of the road. Distracted driving was also part of the problem, as she was caught using a mobile phone while navigating the city's traffic. Traffic signals, designed to ensure order and safety, were also routinely ignored by the rider.
This incident wasn't captured by a single vigilant officer. CCTV cameras which were on the woman's usual route in Cox Town, Banaswadi, captured these violations over time. The sheer number (270) paints a disturbing picture of persistent disregard for safety regulations.
While the details of the woman's licence status remain unknown, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have tracked her down and seized the scooter. This serves as a strong message that such blatant disregard for traffic rules will not be tolerated.
It's important to note that this isn't a singular event. Another Honda Activa rider in Bengaluru previously garnered a ₹ 3.06 lakh fine for traffic violations. These hefty penalties serve as a stark reminder of the potential financial burden reckless driving can incur. Also one should understand that driving is a privilege and should be exercised responsibly.
Beyond the financial repercussions, the true cost of ignoring traffic rules can be far graver. India has an alarmingly high rate of road fatalities, and reckless behaviour like the woman's directly contributes to this grim statistic. Helmets are crucial protective gear, and their absence significantly increases the risk of severe head injuries in accidents. Similarly, disobeying traffic signals and weaving through traffic creates chaotic situations that can lead to devastating and fatal collisions.
While the woman may have viewed these violations as minor inconveniences, the potential consequences were far more significant. She not only endangered herself but also fellow road users. Hopefully, this hefty fine will serve as a cautionary tale, prompting riders to prioritise safety and adhere to traffic regulations.
This incident also highlights the effectiveness of Bengaluru's traffic management system. ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras and CCTVs are aiding authorities in identifying and penalising violators. The Traffic Management Centre (TMC) also plays a vital role, providing lists of vehicles with high violation counts, enabling police stations to take swift action.
