It’s World Environment Day, a day celebrated to encourage awareness and action for the prevention of the environment. Electric and hybrid vehicles are the go-to thing for protecting the environment but can you do that with regular combustion engine vehicles? Of course, if you have a very fuel-efficient vehicle. That way you can help the environment by burning less fossil fuels. So here are the most fuel-efficient vehicles, with one from each mass market carmakers in India that return more than 20 kmpl.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 26.68 kmpl
Maruti Suzuki makes this list and representing it is the Celerio. The brand claims the Celerio has a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 26.68 kmpl from its 1.0-litre petrol engine. It is also the most fuel-efficient vehicle in India which doesn’t get a hybrid powertrain. The Celerio has features like a 7.0-inch touchscreen, two airbags, ABS and more.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 24.08 kmpl
One of India’s best-selling vehicles is also a top contender for the most fuel-efficient vehicle. Its 1.5-litre diesel is very frugal as it returns up to 24.08 kmpl (claimed). The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine’s fuel efficiency figures range between 17.01 to 17.44 kmpl (claimed), depending on the gearbox. The Nexon comes with features like a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, six airbags and more.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 22.8 kmpl
Toyota’s latest model in India is the Urban Cruiser Taisor, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. The 1.2-litre petrol engine has a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 22.8 kmpl, while the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine returns up to 21.5 kmpl (claimed). The Taisor comes loaded with features like a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, a semi-digital instrument cluster, a head-up display and more.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 22.7 kmpl
Championing Hyundai’s claim for fuel-efficient vehicles is the Venue. Surprised? Well, the frugal 1.5-litre diesel engine returns up to 22.7 kmpl (claimed). The 1.2-litre petrol and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engines have a claimed fuel efficiency of 17 kmpl and 18.3 kmpl, respectively. Overall, the Venue turns about to be a frugal subcompact SUV. The Venue is the first subcompact SUV in India to get ADAS.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 22.3 kmpl
Like the Hyundai Venue, the Kia Sonet’s most fuel-efficient engine is the 1.5-litre diesel engine, returning 22.3 kmpl (claimed). The Sonet’s 1.2-litre petrol engine has a claimed fuel efficiency of 18.83 kmpl, while the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol has a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 19.2 kmpl. The Sonet comes with features like a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, ADAS and more.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 22 kmpl
The Kwid is Renault’s smallest model in India and is also its most popular model as well. Powering the Kwid is a 1.0-litre which has a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 22 kmpl. The Kwid is also the most affordable car in India to get an infotainment touchscreen.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 21.2 kmpl
Mahindra’s latest product is the extensive facelift for the XUV300. Called the XUV 3XO, it gets a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine in two states of tune and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The latter is the most frugal engine, returning 21.2 kmpl. The turbo-petrol with a lower state of tune (TCMPFi) has a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 18.89 kmpl, while the higher state of tune (TGDi). The XUV 3XO comes with many segment-first features like a panoramic sunroof, level 2 ADAS and more.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 20.32 kmpl
Out of all the Skoda models available in India currently, the Slavia is the most efficient one. That is until the upcoming subcompact SUV comes out. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in the Slavia has a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 20.32 kmpl, while the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol returns up to 19.36 kmpl (claimed). It comes with features like a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, six airbags and more.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 20.08 kmpl
Of the three Volkswagen models in India, it’s no surprise that the Virtus is the most fuel-efficient mode. Similar to the Slavia, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol in the Virtus returns up to 20.08 kmpl (claimed), while the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine has a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 19.62 kmpl. The Virtus comes loaded with features like a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, six airbags and more.
Claimed fuel efficiency: Up to 20 kmpl
Nissan has a small portfolio in India, with the Magnite being its sole current offering. Interestingly, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine has a claimed fuel efficiency of 20 kmpl. On the other hand, the 1.0-litre petrol engine returns up to 19.70 kmpl (claimed), making it quite fuel efficient. The Magnite comes with features like an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, rear AC vents and more.
