The Yamaha YZF-R9 will now be the brand’s halo road-legal sportbike after the litre-class YZF-R1 became a track-only model.
A million dreams were shattered earlier this year when Yamaha officially announced that it would no longer produce the R1 as a street-legal motorcycle 2025 onwards. And though the new 2025 YZF-R1 and R1 M, showcased last week, did offer a respite, the fact that the duo were track-only, limited edition motorcycles killed that slight shimmer of hope.
But now Yamaha has released the first teaser video of the YZF-R9 and has confirmed that it will unveil the supersport bike on October 9. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, just ahead of the motorcycling event EICMA 2024, where Yamaha is expected to officially showcase the production bike.
The Yamaha YZF-R9 will also be homologated for the World Supersport Championship. It will replace the YZF-R6, which was limited to track use only due to stricter emission norms. With the R9, Yamaha will also come on par with its competition, which includes the likes of Ducati, Triumph, and MV Agusta – all of which have shifted to larger capacity engines beyond 600s.
The upcoming Yamaha YZF-R9 will likely be based on the same platform as its naked counterpart, the MT-09. This means it will be powered by the same liquid-cooled, 890 cc, triple-cylinder CP3 mill. In the naked bike, it dishes out 117.3 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm at 7,000 rpm. Certification documents in Europe have revealed that Yamaha has retained the same output figures in the YZF-R9 as well.
Beyond that, the teaser does confirm that the upcoming Yamaha YZF-R9 will feature the same sleek headlight design and sharp front fascia as the R7. In true Yamaha fashion, the bike teased was in the brand’s iconic blue shade. Although the exhaust was obscured, we could make it out it was an underbelly unit.
Further details of the upcoming Yamaha R9 will be confirmed at global uveil. However, ahead of that we’re expecting Yamaha will bombard us with some more teasers – by then we’ll be able to learn more about the supersport bike.
