This is the first time ZF’s EPB technology has been manufactured for and integrated into a passenger vehicle in the Indian market.
Global automotive technology giant ZF Group has announced the start of production (SOP) of its Electric Park Brake (EPB) system in India, marking a key milestone in the company’s localisation and e-mobility push. This is the first time ZF’s EPB technology has been manufactured for and integrated into a passenger vehicle in the Indian market.
The EPB system will be featured in a recently launched electric vehicle developed by a leading Indian passenger car manufacturer. Though the company has not officially named the OEM, there are strong indications that the receiver is Mahindra.
Designed to reduce drag and improve fuel economy while limiting noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), the EPB also adds significant safety and performance enhancements. It enables emergency anti-lock braking, dynamic actuation, and includes smart brake pad wear detection—functions previously unavailable in traditional mechanical parking brakes.
“This SOP of ZF’s first Electric Park Brake in India represents our commitment to supporting Indian OEMs with best-in-class mobility solutions,” said Akash Passey, President of ZF Group India.
The modular EPB architecture allows for scalability across vehicle types—from passenger cars to light commercial vehicles—giving automakers greater design flexibility. ZF has already delivered over 250 million EPB callipers globally and is investing heavily in software-defined braking, steering, and damping systems.
With India’s EV market accelerating, ZF's move comes at a time when competitors are also making strategic plays. Bosch, for instance, supplies regenerative braking systems for multiple EVs in India, while Continental has expanded its electronic braking solutions for both hybrid and electric platforms. Meanwhile, domestic supplier Brakes India offers electronically controlled braking modules for high-volume ICE and hybrid vehicles.
ZF’s latest announcement underscores the intensifying competition in India’s evolving mobility space, where braking systems are no longer just mechanical components but enablers of next-gen vehicle performance and safety.
