The state government of Maharashtra amended the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) and hiked the traffic fines for different types of traffic violations. The new fines apply to the entire state of Maharashtra. The Maharashtra government has issued notification of the hike in fines under different sections of the MVA. The new hikes are effective from 1 December 2021. A senior transport officer of the Maharashtra government said that the hike in penalties will discourage drivers from violating traffic rules and help them to drive safely. Apart from safety, it will streamline the traffic in the state. The fine for not wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler was Rs. 500. However, as per the new changes, for a first-time offence, the fine is Rs. 500 and for the second-time offence, it is Rs. 1,500. The fine for riding a two-wheeler with three people has been hiked from Rs. 200 to Rs. 1,000. The penalty for reckless driving was Rs. 1000 for two and four-wheelers.
