Choosing either one of the two was quite challenging since both bring novel propositions to the table.
2024 saw the launch of several electric vehicles, but the ones that created the most noise (figuratively) were the MG Windsor EV and the Tata Punch.ev. Both were completely new products from their respective marques, and both ushered in propositions which were quite novel in nature. This has become a bar of sorts for other OEMs to match up to. This makes them both solid market debuts which convinced us enough for us to confer upon them both the most coveted Acko Drive EV Car of The Year Award onto them.
The MG Windsor EV stands out for its unique design and interesting dimensions. It might measure as long as the MG Astor, but its wheelbase is just 50 mm short of the bigger MG Hector SUV, and yet it's wider than the two. Due to these enlarged properties, the MG Windsor EV ends up with quite the spacious interior, which is aptly complimented by its massive boot that measures 604-litres. But what really stood out with the Windsor EV is its Battery-As-A-Service proposition. By packaging the battery and charging costs separately, MG could price the Windsor EV quite aggressively which is just shy of ₹10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
On the other hand, Tata started the whole micro-SUV game in the country with the Punch. Its all-electric brethren, the Punch.ev, took matters to another level not just with its cutting-edge modern design, but with several segment-first features as well. We already think that the Tata Punch.ev is one of the best looking budget EVs in the country. Coupled with features like ventilated seats to wireless charging, electric sunroof, and cruise control – Tata does not skip a beat here that does not scream premiumness. There are two battery pack options to choose from, which further gives customers the best of both long range and mid range options.
EVs will be dominating our headlines throughout 2025. Both the MG Windsor EV and the Tata Punch.ev have become the ideal indicators of how exciting the future will be. So there was no doubt that both were our TOTM EV cars of the year.
