Testing of both the e-motorcycle as well as the indigenous 4680 cells is going on
Ola’s electric motorcycle dreams are going to come to fruition in 2025 as the electric two-wheeler manufacturer has three electric motorcycles in the pipeline. During the announcement of further details surrounding its IPO, we have come to know that the teased e-motorcycle is undergoing testing quite a fair bit.
The development and testing period for the e-motorcycle is currently underway. Ola had shown four motorcycle concepts previously but those aren’t going to be the paths for the first motorcycle to begin with. The premium Ola electric bike would cost in excess of ₹ 2 lakh and hence would arrive in a couple of years’ time.
For now, the focus will be on mass market commuter-centric options, which are likely to carry a price tags of around ₹1-1.50 lakh. According to Bhavish Aggarwal, founder of Ola Electric, the company’s next focus is electric motorcycles as it accounts for 2/3rd of entire two-wheeler sales in the country thereby offering more volumes. However, it should be noted that electric motorcycle sales haven’t picked up in comparison to electric scooters in the Indian market.
Furthermore, these new e-motorcycles will make use of the 4680 indigenous cells that Ola is manufacturing at its Gigafactory. The cells themselves are being tested for application and will be put into the S1 range of scooters first. This will be done by the start of 2025.
Currently, 33 percent of the scooter’s cost comes from these cells that Ola is purchasing from South Korea. If the cells are deployed, the company would be able to lower the cost of the scooter while also increasing its own margins.
We expect to hear more details on the cell development as well as get an idea of what the first Ola e-motorcycle would look like on August 15. From the initial teasers we might see three variants of the upcoming affordable Ola electric motorcycle.
