It’s been 60 years since the Porsche 911 was first unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show
Could the 911 be the last car standing from Porsche’s internal combustion lineup? According to a report from Reuters, Porsche e-fuels team leader Karl Dums said, "Our strategy in the first place is switching to electric mobility and ... we will produce the 911 as long as possible with a combustion engine."
Having said that, Porsche had already announced that it hopes to make 80 per cent of its total sales by 2030 solely through electric vehicles. In line with this, Dums stated that the German automaker will begin the electrification process with the Macan, then move on to the 718 and then finally the Cayenne.
As per the report, e-fuels will most likely be avoided by most major carmakers due to the fact that, they will, in all likelihood, only cater to niche or high-end models. Also, most car brands have made certain commitments towards electrification. To give you an understanding of what we mean by e-fuels, it's made up of renewably produced hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide, which when burnt should ideally make it carbon-neutral.
The other major reason for the Porsche 911 not getting the electric chair is because it accounted for 13 percent of total sales last year. Another possible reason for Porsche to make such a statement would be because of a $75 million investment in Chilean energy company Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF) Global. Although, Dums did make it clear that Porsche's EV plans and e-fuels investment are separate.
In India, the German carmaker sells nine different variations of the 911, which includes the Targa, Turbo, Carrera, GT3 and GT3 RS models.
