The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations has published its all-India vehicle sales data for July 2026, illustrating some interesting trends. The July month is typically soft, yet this year sales rose to record highs across the board. FADA has reported its best-ever July month figures across the bike, passenger vehicle, three-wheeler, commercial vehicle, wheeled construction equipment, and tractor categories with total registrations rising 25.89 percent YoY.
The total figure of 25,91,138 retail units sold is the 12th-highest monthly total on record, in the 151 months since FADA began recording such data in January 2014. Considering that sales typically rise in the festive season beginning in August, the industry body expects demand to be even higher over the next three months.
Passenger vehicle sales crossed the 4 lakh mark for the first time in a July month, with growth in rural areas outpacing urban sales at 24.72 percent vs 15.76 percent YoY respectively.
FADA attributes the growth to the continued effect of GST 2.0 price reductions, ease of access to financing, the recovering monsoon, and the timing of festival dates this year. It also points out that the YoY numbers look particularly good against last July’s depressed sales figures. However, the same factors tempered MoM growth compared to June this year.
Rural purchases exceeded urban ones in all six categories, though there was a decline in demand for bikes, while commercial vehicles and tractors made up for that.
Total EV sales hit a new high of 3,27,901 units in July 2026, accounting for approximately 12.7 percent of all sales, up from 9.6 percent in July 2025. The bike and CV categories set all-time records for EV share.
Most interestingly, the combined sales of CNG, hybrid and electric passenger cars came to 40.59 percent, which is just 1.09 percentage points below the share of petrol cars, at 41.68 percent. This is a remarkable shift, showing that alternative fuels and powertrains are surging in popularity while petrol is losing its predominant position. The gap was 13.21 percentage points in July 2025.
FADA pointed to ongoing confusion and hesitation in the market because of the mandatory adoption of E20 blended petrol as a key factor in the surge of demand for non-petrol cars. Buyers might be postponing their purchases or exploring other options due to uncertainty about reduced mileage and higher maintenance costs. It is possible that alternative fuels will collectively outpace petrol over the coming festive season.
Electric bike sales hit a new all-time record of 11.24 percent, again due to GST reforms and improved sentiment towards EVs in general. However, FADA also pointed out that supply constraints meant that demand was being unfulfilled, with many bookings of popular models left pending delivery.
FADA reports that 74.30 percent of its member dealers expect growth in August 2026, up from 51.24 percent who thought the same last year. This reflects significant optimism for the 2026 festive buying period, largely due to recent and expected upcoming launches, a number of major festive dates falling within August, and post-monsoon cashflow for rural customers. On the other hand, 22.90 percent foresee a flat market and 2.80 percent predict degrowth, even as several dealers report that festive season bookings are already picking up pace.
However, the industry body warns that dealer inventory stock has climbed to 33–35 days, well above its recommended 21-day level, raising the risk of older cars lying unwanted. It also points out that many people hesitated to book new vehicles in August and September last year in anticipation of the GST 2.0 announcement, leading to a bumper October. This will affect how YoY figures are calculated for 2026.
Longer term, 87.85 percent of dealers expect growth over the next three months.₹
