AMD aims to expand R&D and engineering operations in the country.
AMD, the world's second-largest player in the semiconductor domain and a major force in the GPU market, has announced an investment of $400 million in India over the next five years. The funding aims to expand AMD's research and development (R&D) and engineering operations in the country.
Interestingly, the Bangalore facility will evolve into the American tech titan's largest global R&D hub. AMD aims to generate 3,000 engineering positions by the end of 2023, with the new Bangalore campus set to inaugurate within the same timeframe. The announcement was made at the SemiconIndia 2023, held in Gujarat.
"The planned investment includes a new campus in India, slated to become AMD's largest R&D facility globally. The investment encapsulates two decades of growth and successful presence in India. We anticipate the addition of approximately 3,000 engineers in India by 2028," said Mark Papermaster, the Executive VP and CTO of AMD, who also served as Apple's Chief of Marketing under Steve Jobs.
Papermaster added, "Our diversified portfolio spans across CPU Server Data Center, GPU gaming graphics, PC, adaptive computing, and embedded devices. This investment will empower us to broaden our portfolio and capabilities by integrating AI processing across AMD products. Our team in India will play a crucial role in advancing AI and machine learning capabilities in both hardware and software domains."
AMD has maintained a significant presence in India since 2001 when the company inaugurated its first site in New Delhi. The upcoming 500,000 square foot campus in Bangalore is set to dramatically increase AMD's footprint in the country. Currently, AMD operates at 10 locations across Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
SemiconIndia, held in Gandhinagar, is attracting top chipset manufacturers such as Foxconn, AMD, Micron, and IBM. The event aims to encourage investment in India's budding semiconductor manufacturing industry, which aspires to be a global manufacturing hub akin to South Korea and Taiwan.
The announcement aligns with the recent news of Vedanta partnering with three global firms to foray into semiconductor manufacturing.
