Maruti Suzuki Becomes India’s Largest EV Exporter: Over 46,000 e Vitara Units Exported Since Launch

Maruti Suzuki Managing Director & CEO Hisashi Takeuchi has announced that India’s top automaker has also become the country’s most prolific exporter of electric cars, with over 46,000 shipped abroad since production began. Takeuchi made the statement during his speech at the 66th Annual SIAM Convention today in New Delhi.

The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara SUV is the company’s first-ever battery electric vehicle. It is manufactured exclusively in India, at its Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. From there, it is exported and sold in over 50 countries as the Suzuki e Vitara. A cosmetically modified version is also marketed and sold by Toyota as the Urban Cruiser, or Urban Cruiser Ebella, in various markets including India.

Production began at the Hansalpur plant in August 2025, and exports to Europe began in early September, even before the car’s official launch in India. The first batch of 2,900 units was dispatched to the UK, Germany, France, and Norway. At the time, the company said it was targeting over 100 overseas markets, while also developing its chagrin network and infrastructure in India.

The e Vitara is a highly visible example of the government’s Make in India initiative, with India as its global production hub. It is currently sold in Suzuki’s home country Japan as well as multiple countries in South East Asia and Europe. As of June 2026, the company said domestic demand was around 4,000 units booked per month.

Based on Maruti Suzuki’s dedicated Heartect-E platform for electric vehicles, the e Vitara is available in different configurations for different markets. It has achieved a five-star BNCAP safety rating and also four stars from Euro NCAP and ANCAP.

During Maruti Suzuki’s Q4 FY26 earnings call, Rahul Bharti, Chief Investor Relations Officer, had said “Wherever we have sold that car, the customers are very happy. This is both in India and in our export markets. So that bodes well. Currently, we are constrained by production capacity.”
