As part of Google's announcement last week, the key reason behind earlier launch of Android 16 is to ensure widespread adoption on new partner devices arriving in fall.
In a departure from tradition, Google has announced an early timeline for its next operating system (OS) update. Android 16 will make its debut in the second quarter of 2025, with report by Android Headlines pointing to a June 3 launch date. This release would be historic as both Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and Pixel devices will receive the update simultaneously.
As part of Google's announcement last week, the key reason behind earlier launch of Android 16 is to ensure widespread adoption on new partner devices arriving in fall.
By releasing the update in June, the tech giant aims to have Android 16 pre-installed on smartphones debuting in the July-September quarter, the report added.
Following the main release, Google plans to introduce a supplementary update later in the year. This secondary rollout will specifically target artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, enabling developers and device manufacturers to implement new AI features more rapidly.
This scheduling aligns with Google's broader market strategy. The company has been gradually advancing its release dates across its product line, including the recent early launch of the Pixel 9.
The revised Android release schedule complements Google's hardware strategy, with the upcoming Pixel 9a expected to follow the expected timeline.
