The iOS 17.4 update allows EU-based iPhone owners to install apps from third-party app stores for the first time.
Apple has rolled out iOS 17.4, introducing significant changes for iPhone users in European Union countries to comply with the region's new Digital Markets Act (DMA). The iOS 17.4 update, released on March 6, allows EU-based iPhone owners to install apps from third-party app stores for the first time.
The latest iOS update also allows developers to offer alternative payment options beyond Apple's in-app purchase system. These changes aim to address the requirements outlined in the DMA, which aims to curb Apple and Google's dominance in the app market. The new rules mandate that mobile devices sold in the EU must support the installation of third-party app stores and alternative payment systems.
In addition to the EU-focused adjustments, iOS 17.4 brings several new features and improvements for all iPhone users. It includes new emoji characters, automatic podcast transcripts in multiple languages, battery health details for iPhone 15 models, and fixes for issues like defective contact photos.
The update follows similar software rollouts for other Apple operating systems, including iPadOS 17.4, watchOS 10.4 and macOS 14.4. It marks a major shift in the company's approach to the European app ecosystem amid an ongoing anti-trust battle with regulators over its tightly controlled App Store policies.
iOS 17.4 is available for download now on all eligible iPhones. Users can get the update by installing the latest version in Settings > General > Software Update. How developers and consumers will react to the new app freedom granted by Apple in the EU market remains to be seen.
