Mercedes-Benz To Launch Locally Made GLC Electric In India By Year-End

Mercedes-Benz will open bookings for the GLC Electric in India soon, with the SUV going on sale before the end of 2026, the company has announced. Unlike previous electric models sold in India as imports, the GLC Electric will be locally assembled from launch. 

The move is notable for its speed. Mercedes-Benz has said the India-bound car will reach local assembly lines within six months of the model's European sales launch, making it the fastest global product to be assembled domestically in the company's history here. The German carmaker's only Indian manufacturing base is its facility near Chakan, Pune, where it already builds the EQS sedan and EQS SUV alongside a range of petrol and diesel models.

The GLC Electric will arrive in India in a single GLC 400 4MATIC configuration, powered by a 94kWh battery pack and offering a claimed range of up to 715km on the WLTP cycle, per the report. Globally, the model — built on Mercedes-Benz's dedicated MB.EA electric architecture and unveiled at the IAA Mobility show in Munich last September — produces 360kW, or roughly 483bhp, from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, with an 800-volt electrical system enabling DC fast charging at up to 330kW. Mercedes-Benz has not yet disclosed India pricing.

The GLC nameplate has long been one of Mercedes-Benz India's steadier sellers, and its electric successor arrives as the company's battery-electric vehicles gain traction in a market still dominated by combustion-engine luxury cars. Electric vehicles accounted for 14 per cent of Mercedes-Benz India's sales in the April-June quarter, double the share from a year earlier, aided by the CLA Electric, which was launched in April at a starting price of Rs 55 lakh, and the EQS SUV. The company sold just over 19,000 vehicles in India last year.

Local assembly has been central to that push. Mercedes-Benz India has said that around 95 per cent of the vehicles it sells are built domestically, even as several components continue to be imported and attract duty, helping keep prices for models such as the EQS sedan lower than they would otherwise be.

The GLC Electric will also intensify competition in India's small but growing electric luxury SUV segment, where it is expected to compete against the BMW iX3, whose India launch is anticipated only in early 2027.
