Apple hasn't used vertical alignment for its rear cameras since the iPhone 12, but after four years, this is set to change. An image has surfaced that shows the new arrangement of the cameras that Apple is working on for the iPhone 16. This information comes from X leaker Majin Bu, who has also confirmed with industry sources that this is the assembly for the i34 camera project, which is the base model of the iPhone 16.
The return to a vertical setup is mostly because of Apple's newfound focus on spatial video, which debuted with the iPhone 15 Pro models and is only viewable by Apple Vision Pro users.
Apple is also expected to add the action button, which made its debut on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. There will also be a separate capture button with a force sensor located on the right side.
As far as the processor is concerned, there could be a variant of the A17 chipset in the device, but we aren't sure if this would indeed be the A17 Pro, considering the Pro nomenclature has been used for the Pro iPhones. Apple could have an A18 chipset for the base iPhone 16 models and an A18 Pro for the Pro line iPhones.
Some would also claim that Apple has copied Samsung, which uses vertically aligned cameras on the Galaxy S series including the new Galaxy S24, but this discounts the fact that Apple has been using vertically aligned cameras since the iPhone X and only with the launch of the iPhone 13 did it move to an off-centre alignment.
