The AirTags were originally launched in 2021
Apple is reportedly working on the next version of its AirTag device, with plans to release the product in mid-2025, according to a report by Bloomberg. If accurate, this would represent a notable gap since the original AirTags were launched in 2021.
Insiders have disclosed that Apple has started manufacturing tests in Asia to ensure the product is ready for shipment by the intended release date. The forthcoming AirTag is anticipated to offer enhanced location tracking capabilities, owing to the integration of a new ultra-wideband (UWB) chip, akin to those used in the iPhone 15, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
The existing U1 chip in the first-generation AirTags has a restricted range of roughly 10 metres, while the new UWB chip is projected to increase the range to an impressive 60 metres. This improvement could also facilitate a precision finding feature, enabling users to pinpoint the location of their friends with greater precision.
Apart from the technology, the next-generation AirTag may come in different shapes, and Apple could potentially introduce new accessories to accompany the device.
