Mahindra Thar OG Launched Starting at ₹10.32 Lakh With Modern Features, Improved Ride Quality

Mahindra has unveiled its hotly anticipated Thar facelift, and it will now be called the Thar OG. Prices start at ₹10.32 lakh, going up to ₹18.99 lakh for the top-end variant (introductory prices valid till November, ex-showroom). This rugged-looking three-door SUV picks up a lot of design cues from the larger Thar Roxx, and brings plenty of modern comforts and conveniences including new safety features. 

As the Indian SUV market continues to boom, the new Thar OG gives Mahindra's rugged SUV portfolio a fresh face. Although the nameplate has attracted some contronversy, the three-door Thar and the Thar Roxx have sold a combined 4 lakh units since October 2020, accounting for around a fifth of Mahindra's SUV volumes in FY26. Mahindra registered a more than 2X YoY increase in three-door Thar sales last month.

Mahindra Thar OG Prices and Variants

The new Mahindra Thar OG will be available in three trim levels: AXT, LXT, and ZXT. The most affordable AXT variant, priced at ₹10.32 lakh, is available only with the D117 CRD3 engine option, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. The other two trims open up a range of drivetrain options. No soft-top option has been announced.

The AXT trim level lacks many features including the touchscreen infotainment system and six speakers, electrically adjustable ORVMs, drive modes, cruise control, and rear washer and wiper. Features reserved for the top ZXT variants include TPMS, fog lamps, front parking sensors, a wireless phone charger, and all disc brakes. Some off-road related features and capabilities come only with four-wheel-drive variants.

Deliveries are set to begin from October 11.

Mahindra Thar OG Design

Mahindra says the new Thar OG is designed to appeal to those who want a traditional off-road-capable SUV as well as today’s buyers who expect modern design, features and everyday usability.

The front of the Thar OG is defined by its distinctive blocky new grille with wide-spaced vertical slats, similar to that of the Thar Roxx. New LED headlamps and C-shaped DRLs echo the traditional SUV’s round headlamps. There are also ice-cube style LED fog lamps with cornering, and LED taillamps on the back. The front and rear bumpers have been revised, with a wider track. 

The Thar OG now rides on bigger R19 alloy wheels, and a spare is still mounted to the rear door. It’s still available in Everest White, Galaxy Grey, Stealth Black, Battleship Grey, Deep Forest, and Tango Red along with two new colours, Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue.

On the inside, Mahindra has fitted the Thar OG with perforated Truffle Brown leatherette seats. There’s a soft armrest with a cupholder at the rear. The company also says it has reduced noise and vibrations to make occupants more comfortable.

Mahindra Thar OG features and specifications

For safety, the Thar OG now has dual front airbags standard, with four more side airbags on the top trim. Hill-hold assist with descent control, ESP with rollover mitigation, ABS with EBD, and seatbelt reminders are standard. 

The higher variants have a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, a wireless charger in the front, rear AC vents, and 12V power outlet at the rear. An altimeter, compass, and roll and pitch readouts can help on adventure trips. 

Mahindra Thar OG engine options

The Thar OG is built on a new platform, called M_Glyde 4G which the company says is stronger and more stable. It features new Pentalink suspension and Davinci dampers, as seen in the recently launched XUV 7XO. It also gets an electronic locking differential, four disc brakes, and three terrain modes (Mud, Sand, and Snow).

The entry-level D117 1.5L CRDe diesel engine is rated at 87.2 kW and delivers 300 Nm of torque. It’s available only in a RWD configuration with a six-speed manual transmission.

The more powerful mHAWK 2.2L diesel engine puts out 111.9 kW of power with 330 Nm of torque, while the mSTALLION 2.0L petrol TGDi delivers 119 kW of power and 330 Nm of torque. Both options can be paired with a RWD and 6-speed manual transmission, or with four-wheel drive and a choice between a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic. You’ll also have to choose the LXT or ZXT trim levels, which are more expensive than the entry-level AXT.
