Strong demand for trucks and buses lifts the Hinduja Group company's commercial vehicle volumes across both domestic and export markets.
Ashok Leyland sold 22,157 vehicles in the domestic market in September 2026, a 29 per cent rise over the 17,209 units sold in the same month last year, according to figures filed with the stock exchanges on Wednesday. Including exports, total sales climbed 28 per cent to 24,049 units, up from 18,813 a year earlier.
The growth was driven chiefly by the medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) segment, which has underpinned the Chennai-based manufacturer's volumes through the first half of the current financial year. Domestic M&HCV sales rose 40 per cent to 14,746 units in September, with trucks alone up 44 per cent at 12,724 units against 8,862 a year ago. Bus sales in the domestic market grew 24 per cent to 2,022 units.

The light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment, which includes the company's Dost and Bada Dost ranges, posted more modest growth of 10 per cent domestically, with 7,411 units sold compared with 6,710 in September 2025.
Export performance mirrored the trend seen on the trucks side. Total M&HCV sales including exports rose 37 per cent to 16,188 units, while exports of M&HCV buses grew at a slower pace than trucks, reflected in the category's 13 per cent overall rise to 2,944 units when export volumes are added to domestic sales.
For the first six months of the financial year, from April to September 2026, Ashok Leyland's cumulative domestic sales stood at 1,05,877 units, up 24 per cent from 85,559 in the corresponding period last year. Cumulative domestic M&HCV sales rose 26 per cent to 65,632 units, while LCV sales for the half-year grew 21 per cent to 40,245 units. Including exports, cumulative total vehicle sales for the period rose 22 per cent to 1,13,440 units.
The numbers come against a backdrop of sustained momentum in India's M&HCV market this fiscal, as fleet operators have stepped up replacement buying and infrastructure-linked freight demand has held firm. Truck sales, which form the bulk of Ashok Leyland's volumes and account for the largest share of its revenue, have benefited from this cycle, with the company's September growth rate outpacing the broader industry trend reported by rivals for the same month.
The bus segment's performance was comparatively mixed. While domestic bus sales rose 24 per cent in September, cumulative domestic bus volumes for the half-year were down 6 per cent at 9,963 units against 10,555 a year earlier, pointing to continued softness in state transport undertaking orders even as private and school bus demand has held up better.
