This collaboration will enable Ather to source lithium-cells tailored for its electric scooters.

Ather Energy and Amara Raja have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to manufacture battery cells for the former's electric scooters, the Rizta and 450 series. As part of this newly formed collaboration, Amara Raja will develop and supply NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) and LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) Lithium-ion batteries, along with other advanced chemistry cells, to the Bengaluru-based EV two-wheeler manufacturer.

Ather Energy, which recently launched its family electric scooter, the Rizta, has till now designed and built its battery packs in-house as part of the guidelines laid down by the Indian Government to be eligible for subsidies under the FAME scheme.

With this new collaboration, the homegrown electric two-wheeler manufacturer can optimise its production cost further and enable it to source li-ion cells tailored to Ather's specific requirements. "Our aim is to help the domestic industry grow significantly to support India's energy demand now and in the coming future," noted Tarun Mehta, Co-founder & CEO at Ather Energy. Ather has two manufacturing facilities in Hosur, one entirely dedicated to battery production.

On the other hand, Amara Raja, a wholly owned subsidiary of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, aims to be one of India's largest manufacturers of Li-ion and other advanced chemistry cells. As part of this objective, the company recently laid down its investment outlay of ₹9,500 crores to establish a 16 GwH capacity gigafactory in Telangana. With this newfound partnership with Ather, Amara Raja "will focus on building market-relevant solutions in India's journey towards indigenisation of Electric Vehicle technologies."

"At Amara Raja, we have significantly progressed in our efforts to build world-class facilities to manufacture cell and battery packs customised for Indian conditions. Our recent collaboration with Gotion-InoBat will accelerate our efforts towards the same," concluded Vikramaditya Gourineni, Executive Director, Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd
