Audi has unveiled its latest electric model, the Q6 e-tron. It is also the first model from the German marque to be built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), developed in conjunction with Porsche. Audi has revealed two versions of its new electric SUV – the Q6 e-tron quattro and the SQ6 e-tron.
The Audi Q6 e-tron quattro and the SQ6 e-tron pack a 100 kWh battery with a claimed range of up to 625 km on a single charge. The 800-volt battery supports DC fast charging up to 270 kW, and with this, Audi claims the Q6 e-tron series can gain a range of 255 km in 10 minutes. Furthermore, the battery can be charged from 10-80 per cent in 21 minutes. Audi will also be providing an 11 kW charger with the Q6 e-tron.
The Q6 e-tron Quattro’s dual-electric motors produce 382 bhp, which helps it do the 0-100 kmph run in 5.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 kmph. The SQ6 e-tron’s electric motors produce 510 bhp and it can do the 0-100 kmph run in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 230 kmph. Only all-wheel-drive models will be offered at launch, with entry-level rear-wheel-drive models arriving later, depending on the markets.
Audi’s new electric SUV measures 4,771 mm in length, 1,993 mm in width and 1,648 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,899 mm. At the moment, the Q6 e-tron series comes only in the SUV body style. However, as all Audi models get a ‘Sportback’ variant, the Q6 e-tron Sportback will also arrive sometime in the future.
The German marque also says the PPE allows the Q6 e-tron to perfect the proportions – long wheelbase and short overhangs. The Q6 e-tron looks like a quintessential Audi e-tron SUV with a big, yet closed grille dominating the face. In profile, the Q6 e-tron looks like a smaller version of the Q8 e-tron but it has a bigger rear quarter window compared to its bigger sibling. At the back, the Q6 e-tron gets a full-width LED lightbar like all other Audi e-tron models. Furthermore, it also wears Audi’s new 2D logo finished in Black.
The Q6 e-tron series also gets Audi’s new lighting technology. The new tech allows users to customise the lighting signature of the Q6 e-tron in various ways. At the front, the electric SUV gets the Matrix LED headlights has 12 segments that can dim up and down to create a new light signature, while the same is replicated at the back using digital OLED lights.
Audi further states that the rear OLED lights can “communicate with the vehicle’s surroundings”. With this, the Q6 e-tron can warn other road users of accidents and breakdowns and can also display specific warning signals in critical driving scenarios.
The Q6 e-tron gets three displays in the dashboard. The first is the 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, the second is the 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, and it also gets a 10.9-inch screen for the front passenger. This new screen also has a privacy mode that dims the display for the driver, to avoid distractions. It also gets an augmented reality head-up display as an optional extra.
Inside, the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment touchscreen are mounted in a single unit which Audi says gives the interior a “generous and airy feeling of space”. Both these screens are tilted towards the driver and the ambient lighting makes the display “seem to float at night”.
The Q6 e-tron also comes with ADAS features like rear parking assist, cruise control, lane departure warning, efficiency assist, active front assist as well as a distraction and drowsiness warning system. All these features are handled by radar sensors, the front camera and ultrasonic sensors.
