The new Gran Turismo model is now the brand's flagship for its electric lineup, marking a significant step forward in high-performance electric vehicles.
Audi has officially launched its first all-electric performance model, the RS e-tron GT Performance. The four-door coupe is designed to combine powerful performance, technical expertise, and sophisticated details, embodying Audi's standards in electric mobility. The new Gran Turismo model is now the brand's flagship for its electric lineup, marking a significant step forward in high-performance electric vehicles.
The RS e-tron GT Performance has a dual-motor setup, utilising permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PSM) on both the front and rear axles. The front motor, with an output of 338 bhp, features a reinforced driveshaft. The rear axle, however, is equipped with a newly developed motor that produces 556 bhp. By increasing the copper density in the motor's stator and using a more compact rotor, Audi has reduced the weight of the rear motor by 10 kg.
Both electric motors have power reserves for dynamic driving situations. When the Launch Control is activated, the vehicle can briefly harness the battery and motors to deliver an impressive peak output of 912 bhp. This results in intense acceleration, making the RS e-tron GT performance a high-calibre electric sports car.
Audi has significantly improved the vehicle's thermal management system to ensure consistent performance across various driving conditions. The intelligent interconnection of four coolant circuits plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal performance. When the car is in RS performance mode, the system switches to use the air conditioning circuit for battery cooling, allowing for stable extra output during high-demand driving situations.
A new cell chemistry in the high-voltage (HV) battery, with a revised nickel, cobalt, and manganese mix, offers a gross storage capacity of 105 kWh. The increased energy capacity and higher charging currents significantly enhance the car’s performance. The maximum charging power has been increased to 400 amps, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes at high-power charging (HPC) stations under ideal conditions.
Audi introduces a push-to-pass feature in the RS e-tron GT performance, providing a 94 bhp increase in output at speeds above 30 kmph for up to 10 seconds. This temporary power boost is controlled by a timer displayed in the virtual cockpit. This function can be reactivated after a minimum ten-second regeneration period, allowing for repeated use.
The RS e-tron GT performance comes with newly developed air suspension that incorporates 2-chamber/2-valve technology as standard. This design offers a balance between driving comfort and dynamic handling. Audi also offers an optional wheel-selective active suspension system, providing further customization of ride dynamics. According to Carsten Jablonowski, Lead Engineer of the Audi Driving Characteristics Development Team, this suspension system increases the differentiation between comfort and performance modes, allowing drivers to experience optimal handling and precision steering.
Audi's drive-select dynamic handling system in the RS e-tron GT performance includes three standard profiles – efficiency, comfort, and dynamic – along with two RS-specific, individually configurable modes: RS 1 and RS 2. Additionally, the exclusive RS performance mode is optimized for challenging tracks and mountain roads, automatically adjusting torque control, suspension tuning, aerodynamics, and cooling strategy for peak performance.
The RS e-tron GT performance is equipped with 20-inch wheels as standard, featuring tyres designed for low rolling resistance and extended range. Optional 21-inch wheels are available in five designs and come with specialized Bridgestone Potenza Sport tyres, containing up to 55 per cent renewable or recycled materials, including natural rubber and recycled content.
Visually, the RS e-tron GT performance stands out with optional carbon camouflage elements, which Audi introduces on this model. These elements include matte darkened carbon finishes on the roof, bumpers, rocker panels, diffusers, and side mirrors. The new Bedford Green exterior colour and Serpentine Green interior stitching package further enhance the vehicle's distinctive aesthetic.
Inside, the RS e-tron GT performance offers an exclusive design package with Serpentine Green stitching and 18-way adjustable seats. The interior features inlays made of matte carbon camouflage, matching the exterior design. The white power meter and speedometer digital displays pay homage to the 1994 Audi RS 2 Avant, adding a nostalgic yet modern touch.
Audi has refined the e-tron Sport sound system for the RS e-tron GT performance, allowing customers to control the vehicle's acoustic output. This sound experience is influenced by data from the electric motors, accelerator pedal position, vehicle speed, and other parameters, providing an authentic and nuanced sound profile.
