Audi is introducing new PHEVs as a transition tool towards its all-electric future.
Audi is shying away from its all-electric future, one which was supposed to be in full swing from 2030 onwards. As a transition tool to its electric future, which is now probably having a delay, Audi will launch 10 new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) in 2025. However, this does not imply that Audi will stop investing in its all-electric strategy.
The first PHEV that Audi will launch is the A5 PHEV which will make its debut on March 25. The A5 is currently available with pure ICE (internal combustion engine) as well as mild-hybrid engine options. And the mild-hybrid is available with either a petrol or a diesel engine option.
Audi mentioned that the new PHEVs will be a bridge to its electrification future, which is expected to come into play from 2032 when it planned to remove ICE cars from its line-up entirely. However, it seems like that deadline will be moved ahead, given how Audi is pushing the PHEV models fiercely.
Additionally, Audi announced that it is renewing two of its quite popular line-ups globally. The first will be the A6 sedan, which has already made its global debut as the A6 Avant (station wagon) and the other will be the Q3 which will arrive in the next couple of months.
Back in 2021, Audi announced that it would go completely electric by 2033, with its last ICE model being released in 2026. But that now seems to have changed, much like how Volvo has also changed its course of action towards its all-electric future. The Swedish automaker had also initially announced that by 2030, it will also have ICE models in its lineup. A testament to that are the second facelifts for the XC90 and XC60 SUVs. Porsche too has changed its EV-only strategy recently and this can be attributed to changing market conditions where EV sales are now seeing a massive decline, while sales of ICE models are on the rise. Could other manufacturers, like Mercedes-Benz and BMW Group also follow suit?
