The limited-run hybrid supercar, developed in 405 days with input from Audi's Formula 1 team, made its debut at the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.

Audi has unveiled the Nuvolari, a hybrid supercar the German manufacturer describes as the fastest and most powerful production vehicle in its history. The car was revealed on 4 June at a preview event in Antibes, on the French Riviera, ahead of its road debut at the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, where it was driven around the street circuit by the brand's Formula 1 racers, Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto.

At the heart of the Nuvolari sits a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, supplemented by three electric motors and a 7.3 kWh battery, together producing a system output of 1,001 PS. Audi says the plug-in hybrid setup, paired with quattro all-wheel drive, takes the car from zero to 100 kmph in 2.6 seconds and on to a top speed beyond 350 kmph. The body uses a carbon-fibre-reinforced Audi Space Frame, a first for the brand, along with active aerodynamics and a Formula 1-style drag-reduction button for the rear wing.

What has drawn as much attention as the numbers is the pace of development. Audi says the project went from initial sketches to a drivable prototype in 405 days, driven by a small, self-contained team that worked across design, aerodynamics and powertrain engineering rather than in separate departments. Testing took the car from cold-weather trials in Lapland to suspension tuning in southern Spain and high-speed runs at Nardò in Italy.

"The Audi Nuvolari is the fastest and most powerful road car we've ever produced," said Rouven Mohr, Audi's board member for technical development, who previously held a similar role at Lamborghini. Chief executive Gernot Döllner called the project "a striking example of how quickly we at Audi can bring an idea to life," framing it as evidence of a leaner, faster development culture at the company.

The Nuvolari will be built in a run of 499 units, with prices starting upward of £500,000 depending on market, positioning it as a low-volume flagship rather than a volume seller. Its arrival coincides with Audi's decision last year to reverse an earlier plan to end combustion-engine development, and with its first season racing as a Formula 1 constructor, following its takeover of the Sauber team.

For markets such as India, where Audi's growth has been anchored in SUVs and, increasingly, electric models, a car like the Nuvolari is unlikely to reach showrooms given its limited numbers and price point. Its relevance lies instead in brand positioning: halo projects of this kind are typically used to signal engineering ambition to affluent buyers who may never own one but form opinions of a marque through it, a strategy familiar to luxury carmakers competing for attention in India's expanding premium segment.
