Dealers say that enquiries increasingly leaned towards fuel-efficient models and alternative powertrains.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported on Monday that automobile retail sales in India rose 9.55 per cent year-on-year to reach a record 25,31,067 units in May 2026, even as the market absorbed the impact of fuel price revisions. In comparison, total retail volumes stood at 23,10,451 units in May last year. The performance is the strongest-ever May for multiple segments, including three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and tractors, defying the typically subdued seasonal trend for the month.

Dealers say that enquiries increasingly leaned towards fuel-efficient models and alternative powertrains, with the share of electric two-wheelers rising to 9.25 per cent, up from 6.11 per cent a year earlier.

Passenger vehicle retail sales recorded a sharp rise, climbing 23.25 per cent to 4,02,591 units, compared with 3,26,656 units in May 2025. Two-wheelers also posted their highest-ever monthly volumes, growing 7.54 per cent year-on-year to 18,44,947 units, up from 17,15,581 units in the same period last year.

Three-wheeler sales increased 3.56 per cent to 1,11,526 units, while commercial vehicle volumes grew 5.29 per cent to 83,823 units. The data reflects broad-based growth across segments, although the pace varied depending on end-use demand and regional conditions.

Dealers attributed steady demand from commuters and rural buyers to marriage-season purchases and continued affordability under the GST 2.0 framework. However, extreme heat conditions affected showroom footfall in several regions, while supply constraints for specific models also limited momentum.

“As anticipated in our April 2026 release, the watch-outs we had flagged, an above-normal heatwave, fuel-price pressure and the evolving West Asia situation, did come into play during May 2026, and yet Indian auto retail has held its growth trajectory with May’26 registering the best ever May across 3W, PV, Tractors and Overall registrations," C S Vigneshwar, President, FADA, said in a statement.

He added, “The sequential softness of 6.75% MoM reflects the customary post-April seasonal moderation and a delayed south-west monsoon, keeping May largely a pre-sowing month across much of rain-fed Bharat. That growth held through this confluence of pressures underlines the resilience of the underlying demand.”

Looking ahead, FADA expects June to remain steady, supported by the progress of the monsoon, early Kharif sowing activity and the tail end of the marriage season. The association noted that a stable financing environment, following the Reserve Bank of India’s decision to hold the repo rate at 5.25 per cent  in its June review, could also underpin demand.

Dealer sentiment remains balanced, with 50.52 per cent  expecting growth in June, 39.90 per cent anticipating a flat trend, and 9.59 per cent projecting a decline. Segment-wise, two-wheelers are likely to benefit from rural cash flows and continued interest in electric options, while passenger vehicles are expected to draw on existing booking pipelines and new launches. Commercial vehicles, meanwhile, are seen holding steady on the back of goods movement and infrastructure activity.

FADA flagged persistent heatwaves, fuel price trends and geopolitical developments in West Asia as key variables that could influence near-term demand and cost structures.
