Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the leading automaker in India, reported a slight improvement in domestic market sales for May 2024. The company sold 1,44,002 units, marking a marginal year-on-year (YoY) growth of 0.20 per cent from 1,43,708 units in May 2023. Month-on-month (MoM) sales showed a more substantial increase of 4.39 per cent over the 1,37,952 units sold in April 2024.
The mini segment, which includes the Alto and S-Presso models, saw a significant decline in sales. May 2024 sales dropped to 9,902 units from 21,236 units in May 2023. Year-to-date (YTD) sales also fell to 21,421 units from 26,346 units in the previous fiscal year.
The compact segment, such as the Baleno, Celerio, and Dzire experienced setbacks. Sales were down to 68,206 units in May 2024, with YTD sales reaching 1,25,159 units. Despite these declines, the latest 4th generation Maruti Suzuki Swift continues to attract buyers due to its enhanced safety features and best-in-segment fuel efficiency, competing with the Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS and Tata Tiago.
The Ciaz also faced challenges, with sales dropping to 730 units from 992 units in May 2023. YTD sales decreased to 1,597 units. The SUV segment was a bright spot, with sales surging to 54,204 units, up from 46,243 units in May 2023. YTD sales exceeded the 1 lakh mark, a significant increase from 82,997 units in the previous fiscal year.
Sales of the Eeco van fell to 10,960 units. Despite this, total passenger vehicle (PV) sales showed a slight YoY increase. There was a notable decline in export figures, which dropped by 34.41% to 17,367 units in May 2024 from 26,477 units in April 2024.
Sales to Toyota Kirloskar Motors more than doubled, increasing by 109.38 per cent to 10,490 units in May 2024 from 5,010 units in May 2023.
