Toyota Motor's global vehicle sales and production declined for a second consecutive month in August, with weaker volumes in China, the US and the Middle East continuing to weigh on the world's largest automaker. Toyota's global sales fell 6.4 per cent year on year to 790,743 vehicles in August, while global production declined 5.9 per cent to 700,860 units. The figures include Toyota's Lexus luxury brand, Reuters reported on Tuesday.
The latest results extend a period of softer sales in several major markets. China remained a particular drag, while lower volumes in the US and Middle East offset growth in Toyota's home market of Japan.

Toyota's sales in China dropped 22.8 per cent in August, marking the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year decline in the market.
Higher petrol prices have weighed on demand for Toyota's hybrid and traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, adding to the pressure on sales in the world's largest automotive market.
China's weakness has become an increasingly important factor in Toyota's global performance as competition in the country's automotive market intensifies and consumers have more powertrain options, particularly from domestic electric vehicle manufacturers.
Toyota's sales in the US, its largest individual market, declined 4.4 per cent during August. The Middle East recorded a sharper contraction, with sales falling 37.5 per cent.
The declines in these markets more than offset a 9.1 per cent increase in sales in Japan, where Toyota recorded stronger domestic volumes during the month.
The regional mix highlights the uneven performance of Toyota's business across major markets. While Japan provided a positive contribution, lower sales in China, the US and the Middle East pulled down the company's overall global volume.
The figures cover Toyota's vehicle operations along with its Lexus brand, giving a broad view of the automaker's global sales performance.
The decline comes as automakers continue to navigate changing consumer demand, regional economic conditions and shifts in powertrain preferences. Toyota has maintained a strategy that includes hybrid and conventional petrol vehicles alongside battery electric and other electrified models.
Toyota's global production fell 5.9 per cent in August to 700,860 vehicles. Output in China declined 11.3 per cent, while production in the US was down 6.6 per cent.
Japanese production fell 1.7 per cent during the month. The decline was partly linked to production suspensions following an earthquake on the southern island of Kyushu, affecting output in Toyota's domestic manufacturing network.
The simultaneous decline in sales and production in August marks the second straight month in which both measures have fallen on a year-on-year basis.
Toyota's performance in the coming months will provide a clearer indication of whether the recent weakness is concentrated in specific markets or reflects a broader moderation in global vehicle demand. For now, China remains a significant source of pressure, while the recovery of volumes in the US and continued strength in Japan will be important to the company's global sales trajectory.
