Hero has yet again posted the most number of two-wheelers retailed last month.
The Government of India’s VAHAN data has revealed that the Indian two-wheeler industry grew by 5 per cent y-o-y with 14,57,539 units of two -wheelers retailed last month as against 13,94,344 units in May 2023.
Hero MotoCorp has again retained the top spot despite its y-o-y sales shrinking from 5,31,317 units in May 2023 to 4,43,381 units last month. The OEM continues to hold 30.42 per cent of the market share, followed by Honda which holds 26.81 per cent of the market. The Indian arm of the Japanese manufacturer’s sales grew by 44 per cent y-o-y with 3,90,700 units retailed last month.
TVS also recorded sales growth of 8 per cent in May 2024 which saw the Hosur-based manufacturer retail 2,51,848 units. Last month also saw the brand launch new products. Starting with two new variants of the TVS iQube electric scooter, and then followed by the launch of the “Blaze of Black” editions of the Apache RTR 160 2V and 4V.
At fourth, Bajaj recorded sales of 1,65,891 units which is a 6 per cent dip compared to 1,76,475 units it retailed last year on the same months. However, this might improve for the Chakan-based manufacturer just launched the most affordable 400 cc bike in the market in the form of the Pulsar NS400Z. This flagship Pulsar is expected to boost the sales for the brand in the coming month. Similarly, Royal Enfield also witnessed sales dip by 9.6 per cent y-o-y last month, and might see growth in the coming months as it is set to launch not just one, but two brand new motorcycles based on its existing 450 cc and 650 cc platforms.
Among premium brands, BMW Motorrad registered quite a drastic drop of 28 per cent y-o-y with just 534 units retailed last month. On the contrary, Yamaha and Suzuki’s sales grew impressively by 22 per cent and 32 per cent respectively, considering the fact this year saw both launch premium options in the form of the YZF-R3, MT-03 and the V-Strom 800 DE.
